Guided Meditation for Stressed Parents: The Protective Bubble

Parent Coaching and Counseling in St. Louis

Hey parents… do you ever get overwhelmed?

Listen, it can feel REALLY OVERWHELMING to be a parent, especially when you’re the parent of an anxious, angry, easily overwhelmed child or teen. Obviously, no-one likes to feel out of control. Your child doesn’t like being angry. Your teen doesn’t like shouting and yelling and crying (even when it seems like they’re doing it all the time). And we know that you don’t like yelling at your child, either.

The thing is, it can be really easy to match the overwhelmed state of your child.

We all have mirror neurons in our brain that allow us the mirror the emotional state of others, even when we don’t mean to. That means your brain is primed to feel anxious when your child is anxious, or to feel sad when your child feels sad.

It also means that we have a unique opportunity as parents to help our children stay calm just by staying calm ourselves. We can co-regulate, and help our kids get through the stressful stuff by staying relaxed.

Today’s guided meditation is for stressed parents who need help feeling calm when their child is overwhelmed.

As the author of When Anxiety Makes You Angry, and the parent of an almost two year old, I know that kids have BIG EMOTIONS. We want to teach them as many strategies as possible to stay calm and in charge of their emotions, and as parents, we need to be working on these skills ourselves.

Today’s guided meditation gives you a guided imagery focused on protecting your emotional state from others. Give it a listen and let us know what you think.
